Beat in the sugar and the vanilla, then add<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:39:63:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:39:74:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">the chocolate and the zuccata or citron, mixing enough to distribute<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:39:74:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:39:85:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">them evenly. I am inclined to think that the quantities that I have given<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:59:78:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:60:0:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">will satisfy the appetites of ten to twelve non-Sicilians.<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\" data-linebreak=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span data-selectable=\"0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:61:0:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:61:8:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">Although Homer didn\u2019t specify which vegetables Odysseus saw<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:61:8:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:61:19:2:0\" data-complex=\"0\">growing in the gardens of Alcino\u00fcs, we can safely assume that to<\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:61:19:2:0\" data-endposition=\"11:61:30:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">gether with legumes and onions, both the cabbage and the squash<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:61:30:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:61:39:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">families were represented, as well as artichokes and cardoons,<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:61:39:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:61:50:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">which according to Pliny originated in Sicily. All of these vegetables<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:61:50:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:61:62:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">occupy a sizable part of any modern Sicilian garden, and are often<span data-selectable=\"0\" data-singlespace=\"1\" data-lineend=\"1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"text_line\" data-position=\"11:61:62:0:0\" data-endposition=\"11:61:73:0:0\" data-complex=\"0\">prepared in ways similar to those suggested by Apicius.
